Job Description



The Salvation Army Centre of Hope Community and Family Services Summer Student will provide assistance to all Community and Family Services Programs with a focus on the Community Teaching Garden and Community Kitchen.


Service Responsibilities:

  1. Community Teaching Garden/Healthy Homes 
    1. In consultation with the Healthy Homes Worker, assist with the maintenance and care of the Community Teaching Garden and ensure it is watered, weeded, mulched, planted and harvested at the correct times.
    2. Keep a record, both photographic and written, of the garden’s progress.
    3. Ensure produce is stored appropriately and coordinate with Healthy Homes Worker, Food Services Manager and C&FS Program Manager to ensure food is used/distributed while it is still fresh.
    4. In coordination with the Healthy Homes Worker plan and facilitate workshops pertaining to the Community Teaching Garden and healthy living.
    5. Coordinate and publicize workshops pertaining to the Community Teaching Garden.
    6. Assist volunteer gardeners in harvesting and weeding, if they are unable to do so themselves.
  2. Community and Family Services
    1. As needed, work alongside Community and Family Services staff assisting customers accessing our services.
    2. Provide administrative support to the Program Services Manager and Program Coordinator.
    3. Provide assistance in the warehouse as needed.

  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and coworkers of The Salvation Army Centre of Hope
  • Represent the organization in a professional manner, acting in the best interest of the employer at all times
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member
  • Network with other Salvation Army programs and other community agencies
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution
  • Comply with all instructions from the employer concerning the health and safety of employees, as per Section 28(1)and (2) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Complete all mandatory training as directed by the employer
  • Act in the best interest of the employer at all times

This position description will be reviewed by the employee and supervisor on a regular basis.   Amendments can be made at any time at the discretion of the employer. 



  • Currently enrolled in some form of post-secondary education, preferably in the field of human services or social services or equivalent
  • Knowledge of issues relating to poverty and homelessness
  • Experience in the field of social services is preferred
  • Experience with community gardens or related projects
  • Self-motivating and independent worker
  • Ability to provide orientation, training and support to volunteer gardeners of various ages and demographics
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and in writing)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (specifically Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint and Access)
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check vulnerable sector screening secured through either the national Canadian Police Information Centre or through a local police detachment; Note: A satisfactory criminal background check is required
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada


This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:

  • Must be between 18 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment
  • Was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year
  • Intends to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year
  • Is a student in a post-secondary, vocational or technical program
  • Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations


Conditions of Employment:

  • Required to provide written confirmation of enrolment for the next academic year from a post-secondary, vocational, or technical program
  • This is a temporary full time position based on 35 hours per week.
  • Start Date: July 2, 2019 End Date: August 23, 2019, must be available for the complete eight (8) weeks.
  • Hours: Monday – Friday – 9:30am – 4:30pm
  • The working conditions are such that in order to meet the operational needs of the job some flexibility is required as it relates to hours of work.
