Time Commitment:
6 months minimum
2-4 hours/week
Thursdays/Fridays
10am-12pm and/or 1pm-3pm

Position Summary:

The volunteer Child Minder supports the Heartspace program at ADSTV by minding a children in the playroom while parent(s) are in group treatment or individual counselling sessions. The Heartspace program is a specialized prevention, early identification, education, and treatment program for women who are pregnant, parenting and substance-involved and their children. This volunteer position is a vital role to the program, working along side the clinical program team to ensure clients have the opportunity to receive our services without a barrier to child care.

Primary Duties: 

- Minding children between the ages of 0-6yrs in the playroom
- Role model appropriate interactions with children 
- Providing a healthy snack to the children
- Create, facilitate and supervise interesting activities to the children
-Support the Heartspace staff team in sanitizing, tidying/organizing playroom
- Assisting in special events for the children/parents
- Completing documentation outlining children’s interactions and wellness
- Ongoing case consultation and debriefing with Heartspace staff

Role Specifications & Required Qualifications:

  • - Mandatory Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • - Interest and experience with children ages birth to 6 years
  • - Ability to commit to a schedule  
  • - Flexibility regarding number of children attending play group
  • - Understanding and practice of appropriate personal boundaries required
  • - Knowledge of child developmental milestones /addictions or willingness to learn
  • - Currently Emergency First Aid/CPR certification an asset

 

Training:

  • - Agency orientation
  • - Program orientation
  • - Job specific training
  • - In-service training on specific topics offered throughout the year
