Goal of the Assignment:

To assist the person with Alzheimer’s Disease or other Dementias (ADOD) and The Social Facilitator by providing program support and client companionship while assisting to deliver recreation interventions that stimulate Memory, confidence, and overall quality of life within the 6 domains of Recreation.

Time Commitment:

  • A minimum of four hours a week
  • 3 month minimum time commitment

  • Caring, compassionate and patient
  • Good active listening and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently or within a group
  • Ability to accept direction and ask for help when needed
  • Reliable and dependable
  • Sensitive and non-judgmental
  • Transportation to ASLM office

 

Responsibilities

  • To complete the Alzheimer Information Series (3 hours) training and the The Social Training (2 hours) training prior to first session 
  • Assist facilitator with preparation and clean up of programming
  • Welcoming and assisting clients into the office
  • Assist clients with wayfinding throughout the office (Program rooms and washrooms)
  • Assist in facilitation of group based and 1:1 recreational programming
  • Assist clients within group and 1:1 recreation programming to be successful
  • To maintain confidentiality of any information learned about the person and their family members, unless safety is a concern
  • To ensure that the person with dementia is safe and feels as secure and content as possible
  • To submit hours through the Better Impact software that will be downloaded in your orientation with the supervisor
  • Report any and all incidents to immediate supervisor
  • To keep in regular contact with the supervisor and discuss any areas of concern.
  • To respect and adhere to the policies and procedures of the Alzheimer Society
  • A willingness to update knowledge of ADOD through information available in our Society resource center and professional development workshops.
  • Monitor program and participants alongside supervisor

 

Skills and Other Responsibilities:

  • 17 years of age or older
  • Current Vulnerable Sector Police Check

 

 Boundaries

  • The volunteer is prohibited from giving medical advice
  • The volunteer is prohibited from becoming involved in legal and financial affairs of clients within the program
  • The Social volunteer is not expected to, and should not; undertake any activities involving personal care of the person with dementia, such as lifting, bathing, feeding, dressing, toileting or administration of medication(s)

 

Risk Assessment:Medium

 

Training & Supervision:

  • Alzheimer Information Session in-person or online (2 hours)
  • The Social Training (2 hours)
  • Regular debriefing with the Therapeutic Recreation Facilitator
  • Therapeutic Recreation Facilitator will be available during work hours Monday- Friday between 8:30 -4:00 pm
