About Unity Project

Unity Project for Relief of Homelessness in London provides secular, low-barrier, participant-centred and housing-outcome focused emergency shelter, supportive housing and in-home housing stability support programming, serving youth, adults and seniors of all genders age 18+.  

Values of respect, cooperation, interdependence and compassion inform our character. Housing outcomes drive our services. Prioritizing We work to make the duration of stay in our programming as comfortable, productive,and as short as possible. We work to help end the experience of homelessness for those in our care. 

Unity Project has recently purchased another property with plans to construct a purpose-built, intentionally designed emergency shelter. Theproperty development and capital campaign has begun while we continue to operate from our longstanding Old East Village facility.  

This is an exciting time to join our Board of Directors. Strategic Planning is underway this Fall, and we welcome our new Treasurer to join immediately to benefit from the orientation opportunity this provides. 

We are seeking an individual with: 

  • * Values aligned with those of Unity Project 
  • * A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
  • * CPA or equivalent certification preferred, with 3-5 years experience in accounting and/or finance at minimum 
  • * Prior experience in non-profit preferred, not required 
  • * Previous board experience preferred, not required 
  • * Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • * High-level of integrity, transparency, and accountability 
  • * Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of board members and staff


Role and Responsibility: 

Accountability for the organization resides in the Board as a whole and all Board members share responsibility for leadership and effective governance. Unity Project operates by the principles of consensus.  The Treasurer also serves on the Executive Committee, exercising all the powers and duties of the Board between meetings, within authority and accountability directives. 

As a Board Member:  

* be informed about policies, programs, services, and the needs of the community and participants. 
be informed of agenda items, read material and contribute knowledgeably to discussion and decisions.
lead and expand organization’s resource base by sharing expertise, and actively supporting and promoting its work. 
ensure that resources are effectively managed. 
provide strategic leadership, support and direction through generative conversations.  
monitor and evaluate the implementation of policies, strategies, and tactical plans. 
employ and evaluate the performance of the Executive Director. 


The Treasurer serves as a key member of the Board, responsible for the financial oversight and integrity of the organization
, by maintainingaccurate financial records, preparing financial reports, andproviding strategic financial advice to support the organization's mission and sustainability, specifically:
 

ensure full and accurate accounts of assets, liabilities, receipts, and disbursements are kept and follow Canadian generally accepted accounting principles. 
under the direction of the Board, control the deposit of money, the safekeeping of securities, and the disbursements of funds of the Unity Project;  
provideoversight to the Unity Project’s financial situation, including investments and the submission of appropriate forms to the Canada Revenue Agency. 
provide account of transactions, financial statements and financial position, as required 
produce the annual budget and arrange for the annual audit to be carried out, in cooperation with the Executive Director. 
perform other duties from time to time as assigned by the Chair or Board of Directors. 


Time Commitment:
 

Board members commit to one 2-year term and may stand for election to serve a maximum of three consecutive 2-year terms.  

Meetings are typically conducted virtually. The Board meets 10 months of the year (excluding July and August) on the fourth Wednesday of each month, and the Executive Committee meets the third Wednesday of each month (or at date and time determined by members). 

Board members complete work between meetings, with an average monthly time commitment of 5-10 hours a month depending on ad-hoc projects, involvements, and committee work.
