As a part of its Employment Preparation Program for Internationally Trained Individuals, WIL Employment Connections offers clients the opportunity to experience a mock interview to practice interview skills and to receive constructive feedback from experienced interviewers. These clients are well-qualified internationally trained professionals and the mock interview is a powerful and positive experience for them.
In order to make this as realistic an experience as possible, we recruit volunteer mock interviewers from the community. We like to have people with Canadian hiring authority or experience in a position of hiring influence, but ultimately we are looking for people with experience as a Canadian interviewer.
The volunteer commitment includes interviewing up to five individuals over a three-hour period – from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm on a Tuesday. We ask for you to commit to at least six sessions a year. (The number could be more or less depending on the number of volunteers). We provide the clients’ resumes and job postings as well as sample questions in advance. You are encouraged to use your experience of interviewing to design questions you would typically use to gather information during an interview. The interviews last 20 minutes and are recorded (you are not visible, just the client). We provide a feedback sheet for you to fill out regarding each client’s interview and we then give it and the recorded interview to the client during the next day’s debriefing session.
If you are interested in this opportunity to contribute your skills towards immigrants’ employment preparation, please email your resume and a statement outlining why you are interested in volunteering to the Employment Prep team: MockInterview@wil.ca, or phone 519-663-0774 for more information.
