From Grassroots to Registered Charity:
A Pathway for Grassroots Groups to Gaining Charitable Status
Many community groups don’t begin with incorporation documents — they begin with energy, care, and lived experience. Neighbours feeding neighbours. Artists creating spaces for belonging. Organizers responding to urgent needs. This is real community infrastructure, long before any formal structure exists.
Grassroots to Charitable Status: A Pathway to Sustainability is a free, hybrid, 8-session guided learning series designed to honour that work — and make the “charitable status question” feel a whole lot less mysterious. We’ll walk alongside emerging groups as they explore what charitable status requires, whether it’s the right fit, and what it actually takes to get ready. This is not a compliance bootcamp. It’s a practical, supportive, plain-language series built around empowerment, peer learning, and tools you can use right away.
Across eight 90-minute to two-hour sessions (May–June 2026), participants will work through the legal, governance, financial, and strategic readiness pieces that typically show up on the road from grassroots to charitable — with space to ask real questions, learn from experts, and compare notes with other groups navigating similar terrain. Expect workshops, panels with legal/accounting guests, mentorship-style Q&A, peer learning circles, workbook activities, real-world case examples, and hands-on document review (bylaws, policies, financials, and more).
