Cultural Gully Brings London Its First Diwali Mini-Market: A Celebration of Culture, Community, and Connection

For many in London, October 26, 2024, marked more than just a date on the calendar—it was the day the city saw its very first Diwali Mini-Market, thanks to The Cultural Gully and support from the Inclusive Community Events Program (ICEP).

Founded by Raunak Seth and Kayley MacGregor, The Cultural Gully is a vibrant events and entertainment company rooted in Southwestern Ontario. The organization is dedicated to uniting communities by reimagining how South Asian traditions are shared and celebrated. Their mission is simple yet powerful: create safe, inclusive, and joyful spaces that break down barriers and honor culture through connection.

Diwali, known as the festival of lights, is one of the most important celebrations in South Asian culture. Yet until now, London lacked a public platform where the event could be celebrated widely and inclusively.

“While there are many holiday and Christmas-themed markets,” says Raunak, “our goal with this event was to recognize and educate the public on the meaning of Diwali and to celebrate in an approachable way through this market.”

The Diwali Mini-Market transformed Innovation Works into a vibrant hub of culture and community. The event featured live performances, music, and interactive cultural activities that gave attendees a deeper understanding of the significance of the festival. At its heart was a bustling market that uplifted local South Asian small business owners, many of whom don’t have physical storefronts, with the opportunity to share and sell their products, including food, art, jewelry, and clothing.

“With the support of the fund, we were able to keep costs to participate low for vendors and free for community members to attend, which eliminated a barrier for these small businesses,” adds Kayley. “The event was a great success, and we look forward to potentially hosting this or other events in Innovation Works in the future.”

Events like these do more than just showcase tradition. They create a space for joy, education, empowerment, and belonging. They help London grow as a city where diverse cultures aren’t just seen but celebrated.

The Inclusive Community Events Program, funded by donors to the Dharshi Lacey Catalyst Fund, made this celebration possible. It allowed Cultural Gully to bring a rich cultural experience to life while fostering economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
