Earth Day Documentary Screening by SCAN! London Highlights Urgency, Unity, and the Power of Community Spaces

In honour of Earth Day, SCAN! (Seniors for Climate Action Now) London gathered with community members at Innovation Works for a powerful documentary screening that brought climate action to the forefront in a deeply moving and accessible way. The event, made possible through the support of the Inclusive Community Events Program (ICEP), was more than just a film screening; it was a rallying call for collective action and intergenerational solidarity.

Founded just over a year ago, SCAN! London is a growing grassroots group of Canadian seniors who are compelled to act in the face of the escalating climate crisis. Though they started with just four committed members, their involvement in the nationwide Seniors for Climate network has expanded their reach, uniting more than twenty local members and many more across the country in a shared mission to raise their voices for the sake of future generations.

“We are so appreciative that we were able to screen our documentary from last Fall’s events at Pillar on Earth Day,” said Susan, a SCAN! London member. “It was amazing there was no cost for the space, as we are an organization with very limited funds available to us. It was very welcoming and a comfortable space. That is why I considered asking to use it.”

The film, which explores the real consequences of climate inaction, left a lasting impression on attendees. “Everyone I have spoken to who has seen the documentary felt it was very well done, and very moving,” Susan shared. “It made us all realize time will run out if changes to reduce carbon emissions don’t happen.”

Despite a modest turnout of sixteen participants, the impact of the screening extended well beyond the room. The event helped build momentum for SCAN!’s upcoming initiatives, including their Fall 2025 event and the circulation of a shorter, 23-minute version of the documentary that’s available online.

The Inclusive Community Events Program was instrumental in bringing this event to life. By covering the cost of the space, the program helped SCAN! London overcome a major barrier to hosting an event of this kind. It gave them the freedom to focus on what mattered most: mobilizing awareness, sparking dialogue, and fostering a welcoming environment for community members to engage with climate justice.

In the face of a global crisis, SCAN! London stands as a reminder that change can come at any age, and that seniors—often overlooked in activist spaces—are key leaders in the fight for a livable future. Their work also shows the importance of collaboration with youth, community organizations, and institutions like Pillar to amplify their message.

This Giving Tuesday, you can help make more events like this possible. By donating to the Inclusive Community Events Program, you’re supporting grassroots groups like SCAN! London who are bringing people together, educating the public, and pushing for a more just and sustainable world.
