London, Ontario – Pillar Nonprofit Network is proud to announce a $345,000 donation from RBC as part of its new approach to support Canada’s nonprofit sector. This multi-year donation will fuel the launch of Pillar’s Nonprofit Leadership Resilience Lab, an initiative designed to strengthen the resilience, capacity, and effectiveness of nonprofit leaders across Southwestern Ontario.
The Nonprofit Leadership Resilience Lab responds to a critical moment for the sector. Nonprofit leaders are facing escalating challenges including burnout, staffing shortages, and persistent funding barriers - all while demand for nonprofit services continues to rise. Many leaders, particularly those from equity-deserving groups, operate with limited resources and few opportunities for mentorship or professional development.
“Nonprofit organizations are at the core of economic and community transformation in Canada,” said Stephen Mattis, Commercial Vice President, London St. Thomas, RBC. “Collectively, they employ 2.5 million people, making the nonprofit sector the largest employer in Canada.”
"At the helm of these organizations are leaders who are tasked with leading through complexity with limited resources to support them," said Tanja Wilkins, Regional Vice President, London St. Thomas, RBC. "More and more nonprofit leaders are reporting burnout, so it's important that we find ways to help them feel better prepared to face obstacles and manage through challenges."
Over three years, the Lab plans to support more than 100 nonprofit leaders through:
● Executive Coaching & Resilience Supports – Trauma-informed coaching and resources rooted in Decent Work principles.
● Cohort-Based Peer Learning – Structured groups for shared learning, problem-solving, and connection.
● Equity-Centred Leadership Development – Workshops on inclusive governance, systems change, and equitable decision-making.
● Regional Peer Retreats – In-person gatherings to foster reflection, collaboration, and cross-sector dialogue.
● Skills-Based Volunteering with RBC – Opportunities for RBC employees to mentor and share expertise in finance, digital tools, and HR.
“Nonprofit leaders are at the heart of our communities, yet too often they lack the support they need to thrive,” said Maureen Cassidy, CEO of Pillar Nonprofit Network. “With RBC’s support, we can help leaders build resilience, foster equity, and strengthen the organizations that make our communities more inclusive and vibrant.”
This donation is part of RBC’s new approach to help strengthen the capacity of Canada’s nonprofit sector. The Lab launched in October 2025 with planning and program design, followed by the first leadership cohorts, executive coaching sessions, and regional retreats beginning in early 2026.
