The London Environmental Network (LEN) is seeking individuals with a passion for the environment and an interest in nonprofit governance to join its Governance Committee.
Volunteer Position Details:
The Governance Committee is a volunteer-run group consisting of a Committee Chair, Board Directors, community volunteers, and a LEN staff member. The purpose of the Committee is to oversee and ensure the effective governance and policy management of the LEN.
Committee Responsibilities:
The Governance Committee is responsible for the organization’s governance practices and procedures, policy development, compliance, evaluation, and supporting aspects of Board recruitment, selection, and succession planning. The Committee follows an annual work plan of these tasks, which are completed through a combination of independent and collaborative committee work. The Committee meetings are an opportunity for members to review material, seek clarification, and provide suggestions on matters relating to organizational governance.
The Governance Committee reports to the Board of Directors (via the Committee Chair), allowing the Board to focus on strategic decision-making while maintaining oversight of the organization’s governance practices. Thus, the Governance Committee plays a vital role in the organization’s long-term sustainability, ensuring the LEN is well-governed and working towards its strategic objectives over time.
Time Commitment:
The Committee currently meets virtually 5-6 times per year, with approximately 1-3 hours of independent work expected between meetings. The minimum term on the committee is 1 year and may be renewed for an additional year, in perpetuity. Currently, the Committee meets every other month on the third Wednesday from 7 pm to 8:30 pm.
The Organization:
The LEN is a registered charity in London, Ontario, that aims to create a sustainable and resilient city. The LEN works to connect and engage individuals, nonprofits, and businesses in the community to reduce their environmental impacts. This is achieved through solutions-based programs, such as Green Economy London, as well as being an umbrella organization for London’s 40+ environmental nonprofit organizations and community groups. Preferred Experience and Skills:
At this time, we are seeking individuals with expertise in law, human resources, and governance in particular. Additionally, we welcome individuals with the following experiences and skill sets to apply:
- Previous experience in non-profits, strategic planning, or equity, diversity, and inclusivity-related work
- Knowledge of charitable and/or nonprofit organization structure is an asset
- Experience working with environmental nonprofit organizations, such as one of our LEN Member organizations
- Excellent organizational and reporting skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently to meet deliverables

If successful, we will follow up with you in September-October for a 30-minute virtual meeting to learn more about you and answer any questions you may have about the opportunity. Depending on timing and suitability, you may be invited to join the Committee beginning in November 2026 or January 2027.
