While nonprofit success is measured in more than just revenue, board members must keep a close eye on the financial direction of the organization and its economic stability to fulfill their responsibility. This session will help board members gain a better understanding of their financial stewardship responsibilities and give them a starting point for comprehending key financial data.

Participants will learn about:

Protecting the Nonprofit

  • Governance

  • Internal controls

  • Risk management

Managing the Nonprofit

  • Understanding financial statements

  • Creating a budget

  • Board and management reporting

  • Financial management

Board Members, Executive Directors/CEOs, board support staff, and those interested in learning about becoming volunteer board members who want to have a better understanding of the importance of financial management for their organization. 

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:

Janet Grantham
(Past) President and CEO. Mainstreet Credit Union Limited (Retired 2021)

​​Janet Grantham retired from her role as President and Chief Executive Officer of Mainstreet Credit Union in October 2021.  At the time of her retirement, Mainstreet was a full service, multi-branch credit union located in Southwestern Ontario, with 10 branches and assets under administration of over $1.2 billion.  

She served the credit union system since 1979, including the Board of Directors for Credit Union Central of Ontario, The Co-operators, and Cumis. She has served on a number of credit union system committees both nationally and provincially.  

Janet has been on the board of Pillar Nonprofit Network since April 2023.  She actively supports a number of other organizations in her community, including the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital Foundation where she currently serves as Chair of one of their subsidiary boards.

Shahrzad Pooya
Financial Reporting Manager at Libro Credit Union

Shahrzad Pooya is a CPA, CA and started her career in public accounting at EY where she worked with a variety of nonprofit and financial services clients throughout Canada, the United States, and Australia. Subsequently, she has held a number of roles at Libro Credit Union within the Risk and Finance space and currently serves as Libro’s Financial Reporting Manager. Shahrzad has been on the board of Pillar Nonprofit Network since April 2023.
