A Visit With St. Nicholas

Families are invited to a Visit with St. Nicholas.  Enjoy a hot pancake breakfast, followed by a baked gingerbread man to decorate for dessert.   Hop aboard a horse drawn wagon for a

beautiful winter ride around the Village and visit a selection of buildings preparing for Christmas.  Of course the day wouldn’t be complete without the visit with St. Nicholas himself, who is happy to see each child.

Dickens’ Dinner: Gabriel Grub and the Globins: A Christmas Story from Picwick Papers – A Play by Jason Rip

This holiday ghost story pits Gabriel Grub, a grumpy gravedigger, against an army of goblins come to do him both harm and good. Many of the themes of "A Christmas Carol" were explored by a twenty-something Charles Dickens in this early tale of the grotesque.

Enjoy a traditional 19th century country Christmas dinner served family style and featuring local roast goose, root vegetables, soup, cabbage salad, pickles and for dessert; mincemeat pie or plum pudding. After dinner, experience a play based on a short story by Charles Dickens.

Haunted Hayrides: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – A Play by Jason Rip

A new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic horror tale, this year's Hayride tells the fearful fable of a scientist, Henry Jekyll, determined to separate the good and evil inside himself into two unique beings. As the evil Edward Hyde begins to gain more control over their shared body, will Dr. Jekyll be lost forever?

Fanshawe Frolic Presents: The Ragtime Frolic Ball

Even through World War I, people continued to dance the popular ragtime dances introduced between 1910 and 1914.  The dances were fun and easy to do and the music was lively and cheering so social dancing helped keep up spirits and keep the community together.

So join us as we celebrate this era of popular dances at our annual Fanshawe Frolic  weekend August 1-2. This year’s special theme is “Ragtime Frolic”, featuring dances popular during the war years – 1914-1918.

Thanksgiving At the Village

Villagers gather in thanks for the bountiful harvest.  Join the celebration!  Learn about the history of apples and their preservation for the winter. 

Reserve your traditional Thanksgiving Dinner at the Pioneer Village Café available all weekend.  Sittings at 12 pm and 2 pm feature roast turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes, root vegetables, homemade soup and fresh pies.  

Fanshawe 1812: The Invasion of Upper Canada

Dispatch received from the 1st (Royal Scots) Regiment, Grenadier Company:  “Citizens…His Majesty’s crown forces will make an aggressive attempt to reclaim the territories of Western Upper Canada. It is our intention to garrison our forces at the Village of Fanshawe and choose this ground to halt the advance of the American forces.  Beware of spies in your midst.”  Which side will you support?  

The First World War

On August 4th, 1914, Canada and Britain declared war on Germany. The ensuing conflict lasted until November 11, 1918 and more than 60,000 Canadians were among the dead, wounded or missing.  Remember the history of World War I by participating in over a dozen activity stations, including a Military Funeral Procession, Assault on a German Bunker and WWI fashion show.  

Victorian Teddy Bear Picnic

All the bears are gathering today for a Victorian Teddy Bear Picnic.  Bring out your favourite stuffed friend for an afternoon of music and games in the park.  Join Bearemy from Build a Bear Workshop for a parade and enjoy a picnic of cookies and lemonade served in a real china tea cup. Afterwards, enjoy a puppet show and storytelling and help us find all the Bears that are hiding in the village. Don`t forget your picnic blanket!

Dominion Day

On the 1st of July, 1867, Canada became a self-governing colony within the British Empire. Relive the past and discover the events surrounding early Dominion Day celebrations (now Canada Day).  Patriotic speeches, music by The Shoutts, cake and lemonade, and vintage base ball are a few of the activities that will bring the past to life.

 

Enjoy a red and white special at the Pioneer Village Café:  BBQ ribs and chicken with potato salad coleslaw and traditional rice pudding.
