Child and Youth Counsellor - Tandem Francophone

Recognized throughout Southwestern Ontario as a leader in children’s (birth-14 years) mental health, Vanier Children’s Mental Wellness provides innovative treatment programs and services for children, experiencing emotional and behavioural challenges. As a registered charity and not-for-profit agency, Vanier has been in operation for over 54 years and is funded by the Ontario government. Vanier Children's Mental Wellness mission is to improve the lives of infants, children, and their families through the provision of mental health services based on clinical excellence, collaboration, partnerships, and system leadership. Appointed by the Ontario Government as “Lead Agency for Child/Youth Mental Health (CYMH) System Management” in London-Middlesex (2014), Vanier is also accountable for community-wide Child/Youth Mental Health System Planning (MCYS: “Moving on Mental Health”).  

Position Summary:

Responsible for providing intake assessment, crisis intervention and brief solution focused counselling and support services for children and families with serious behavioural, emotional and social problems and as required completing these responsibilities in French language. This is a collaborative project of three agencies: Vanier Children’s Wellness Centre; Merrymount Family Support & Crisis Centre; and Humana Mental Health Support.

Education/Training/Experience:

  1. College diploma or university degree in child and youth work; social service work or equivalent specialization
  2. Preference given to applicants with 3 or more years’ experience delivering crisis supports / work in a crisis setting.
  3. Bilingual in French is required.
  4. Must have Red Cross First Aid, CPR ‘C,’ and Safe Management certification at the time of applying for this position.
  5. Valid driver’s license, with adequate liability and own vehicle.

Abilities:

  1. Demonstrated ability to provide excellent written communication skills and efficient computer skills.
  2. Demonstrated ability to provide crisis work including clinical, case management, group work and family counselling.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of the children’ service delivery system.
  4. Demonstrated ability to facilitate community or internal workshop/training experience.
  5. Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team environment and in effective collaboration with community professionals.
  6. Brief solution focus counseling skills for children with complex emotional, behavioural, social issues and their families.
  7. Demonstrates knowledge of vicarious trauma with the development of a solid self-care plan.

  1. TAPP-C Assessment Trained
  2. ASIST certification
  3. EMHware for CIT trained
  4. Fluent in a language other than English and French, including ASL   
  5. Brief Counselling Training
  6. InterRAI ‘Screener Plus’ training
  7. Motivational Interviewing Training

Pay:

  • $28.94 - $32.56 per hour
