The Organization:

Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to reaching every Canadian affected by a brain tumour through advocacy, research, information, support and education. We are made up of a dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and health care professionals, all working together for the same goal: to find the cause of, and cure for, brain tumours while improving the quality of life for those affected. We are unique in that we work to serve the needs of Canadians affected by both malignant and non-malignant brain tumours. Hope and support are at the core of everything we do.

About the Opportunity:

Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada is seeking passionate volunteers to join our Advocacy Committee, a standing committee of the Board of Directors. This committee plays a vital role in advancing the organization’s mission by leading and supporting advocacy efforts that promote awareness, influence public policy, and strengthen relationships across Canada’s brain tumour community.

As an Advocacy Committee Member, you will contribute your expertise, lived experience, and insight to help shape and guide the organization’s advocacy strategy at the national level.

Key Responsibilities:

Committee members will work collaboratively to:

  • Identify key policy and advocacy priorities aligned with the organization’s mission.
  • Develop and recommend advocacy strategies to the Board of Directors.
  • Engage with policymakers, government agencies, and allied organizations to influence health and social policy.
  • Promote public awareness campaigns and support community mobilization efforts.
  • Strengthen partnerships and coalitions within the brain tumour and broader health advocacy community.
  • Monitor policy changes and assess the effectiveness of advocacy initiatives.
  • Review and contribute content and expertise to advocacy-related submissions, documents, letters or articles.

Who We’re Looking For:

We are seeking individuals with experience or interest in one or more of the following areas:

  • Public policy and government relations

  • Nonprofit and community advocacy

  • Healthcare or medical expertise

  • Regulatory or legislative knowledge

  • Communications, media, or public speaking

We welcome applications from individuals with diverse professional backgrounds and lived experiences, including brain tumour survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community advocates. Geographic diversity across Canada is also a priority.

Commitment:

  • Term: Three years (renewable once)

  • Meetings: At least four per year, typically held virtually

  • Time Commitment: Approximately 2-4 hours per quarter

Structure and Support:

The Advocacy Committee includes both Board and community members (5–6 total). A staff liaison supports the committee by coordinating meetings and facilitating communication between the committee and the organization’s leadership.

Why Join:

Joining the Advocacy Committee offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to a collective voice for change. Members help ensure that the needs and perspectives of those affected by a brain tumour are reflected in national conversations about care, research, and support.

Through this role, you will connect with others who share a commitment to advocacy and help strengthen the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to support individuals and families affected by brain tumours across Canada.
