Volunteer Opportunity: Commercial Composting Team
London Food Coalition
The London Food Coalition (LFC) at Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre is a grassroots network of 30+ frontline organizations working to transform how food is shared, valued, and experienced. We’re connectors, and not just providers creating pathways to nourishment rooted in dignity, abundance, sustainability, and collective joy.
We rescue high-quality surplus food from farms, suppliers, and retailers across London and Middlesex, redistributing it to meal programs, shelters, community centres, Indigenous organizations, and more.
In 2025 alone, LFC:
- Diverted 232.7 tons of food from landfill
- Prevented 582 tons of CO₂e, an equivalent to taking 127 cars off the road for a year or powering 110 households
About the Role: Composting Volunteers
As part of our commitment to reducing environmental impact, LFC is launching a commercial composting program. We’re looking for a small but mighty team of six volunteers to help make it thrive.
At LFC, we believe food waste deserves a second life.
Volunteers will work hands-on with our industrial composter, helping to:
- Prep and process food scraps
- Support the compost drying process
- Transfer finished compost into storage
- Manage outdoor black composters during warmer months
Volunteers will work in pairs, receive full compost training, and have ongoing support. This role is perfect for folks who enjoy teamwork, don’t mind getting a little hands-on, and love seeing waste transformed into something meaningful.
Time Commitment
To keep our system running smoothly, we’re seeking teams of two on:
- Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
- 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Each team will be responsible for operating the composter and managing the composting process during their shift.
