Progressive Animal Welfare Services, a charity dedicated to supporting at-risk and low-income families in Southwest Ontario through any crisis, is actively seeking a motivated individual for the role of Treasurer and Financial Lead.

Are you ready to play a pivotal role in our mission? As the Treasurer and Financial Lead, you will assist the Board in fulfilling essential obligations related to financial planning, audit processes, and corporate controls. 

This key position reports to the Board Chair and is accountable to meet the documented expectations of all Board members.

Main responsibilities 

  • Team leadership and communication - Develop structure and direct volunteers to assist as needed to deliver the following 

  • Maintain the organization's official books

  • Manage very prompt payment of invoices from our veterinary partners

  • Manage banking arrangements and accounts - maintaining minimum balances, approving authorized signing officers, co-signing cheques or other payments as defined in PAWS policies

  • Ensure accurate deposit and charitable receipt of donations, reconciling with the Keela donor management system on a monthly basis.

  • Gather inputs to prepare an annual Budget. 

  • Provide monthly actuals vs budget with analysis and projections to help guide Board decisions.

  • File semi-annual HST/GST rebate

  • Track and control expenditures for designated Grant funds. Assist Grants Lead with preparation of periodic reports. 

  • Convene a Finance committee a minimum of two times per year for review and approval of

    • Policies as needed for financial components.

    • Management of banking and accounts.

    • Filing such as annual charities return T3010.

    • Recommendation re: the annual appointment of an external auditor/reviewer if needed.

    • Annual review/renewal of PAWS insurance coverage. 

    • Input to the Board related to plans and strategy.

    • Tracking of specific funds such as designated grants.

    • Any perceived financial risks or changes of procedure needed.

Skills to be demonstrated: 

  • 3-5 years experience in accounting, preferably non-profit accounting

  • Good working knowledge of QuickBooks, QuickBooks Online

  • Proactive guidance re financial forecasts and timely response to application team queries 

  • Monthly Financial reporting to the Board that’s accurate and timely

  • Team leadership and communication, preferably experience with engaging volunteers 

  • Appropriate controls and documentation of all financial transactions

  • Timely submission of report/returns to CRA

  • Knowledge of Charities Directorate guidelines related to donation receipts.

Commitment:

  • Term - 2 years

  • 4 to 5 hours per week

  • Attendance at Monthly Board meetings required.
