Role of Treasurer

Suicide Prevention Middlesex-London is a non-profit, voluntary council comprised of individuals representing organizations that deliver suicide prevention, support and/or treatment programs as well as suicide survivors.

The Treasurer is responsible for maintaining the financial records of the organization, Suicide Prevention Middlesex London (SPML) in accordance with accounting standards for non-profit organizations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining all financial records associated with SPML in a confidential and orderly manner.  

  • Keeping all current and historical financial records for 10 years.

  • Completing and submitting the annual Income Tax Return by May each year.

  • Completing an Annual Financial Statement for the Fiscal Year.

  • Records donations, issuing income tax receipts and thank you letters.

  • Makes bank deposits and reconciles bank account.

  • Reporting on the finances of the SPML to the committee at each meeting or as requested.

  • Assist with securing grants/funding and providing necessary financial information for applications. 


Maintaining Records

All financial records are maintained in a red binder.  Records are kept for 10 years; older records are shredded each year. Recent years are also filed in the group’s Google Drive.

Annual Tax Return

Copies of the previous returns for the last 10 years are in the red binder.  Forms have not changed significantly over the last number of years so you can use these as a guide. Forms are physically mailed into CRA with copies maintained on file. 

Our fiscal year is from January to December.
