The Struggle of Indigenous Mothers

78 Riverside Drive
15-Oct-2024 - 6:15 pm to 8:45 pm

Truth & Reconciliation: How Indigenous Mothers struggle to keep their history and culture alive in present times.

Indigenous Mothers have lost so much through the residential school system and our European systems of healthcare and social care continue to make it a struggle for Indigenous Mothers to raise their children in a way that honours their heritage and traditions.

Indigenous mothering has been lost. In our privileged lifestyle, we must seek a greater understanding of the needs of Indigenous Mothers and look for ways to support them as they learn and reconnect with their traditions.

Dr. Renée E. Mazinegiizhigoo-kwe Bédard is Anishinaabeg, Kaien’kehá:ka, and French Canadian. She is a member of Dokis First Nation, Ontario, Canada. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at Western University in both the Gender, Sexuality and Women Studies Department and the Indigenous Studies program. Her research primarily focuses on Anishinaabeg culture, motherhood, Indigenous women's issues, and cultural traditions.
